Wonders & Worries is unique in offering individual support as an option for our clients. Our services are responsive to children’s and families’ needs, and we partner with parents to determine the best support for each child in the family.
Individual support may be recommended if:
- A support group is not starting for a few weeks and the child needs immediate help.
- The child is very young (less than 5 years old) or has special needs that require the personal attention gained only through individual support.
- The child has other stressors, or the illness situation is complicated and best addressed one-on-one
Individual sessions usually involve six weekly sessions, followed by a parent consultation and further assessment of the child’s need for support. Monthly support or intermittent support is available if needed after the initial six sessions. As with group sessions, individual sessions are individualized for each child, but focus on our copyrighted Illness Education and Coping Curriculum. These six sessions provide children and teens with a foundation to cope positively with the ups and downs that illness can bring by providing an age-appropriate understanding of the illness, its treatments and side effects; facilitating the expression of feelings related to changes in the family; and identifying individual coping skills to help ease feelings of sadness, anger and fear.
