Wonders & Worries offers several groups for children ages 5 to 18. All groups are designed to help children and teens meet other kids coping with similar experiences, and gain an age-appropriate understanding of the illness. Groups are also designed to give kids opportunities to express feelings and build positive coping skills.
-6-week group sessions for new clients:
We regularly offer groups for new Wonders & Worries clients. These 6-week groups meet weekly with the same children or teens attending each week. The 6-week groups regularly offer a tour of an oncology treatment center for kids whose parents have cancer.
While the group sessions are individualized to each unique group, our group sessions focus on our copyrighted Illness Education and Coping Curriculum. These six sessions provide children and teens with a foundation to cope positively with the ups and downs that illness can bring by providing an age-appropriate understanding of the illness, its treatments and side effects; facilitating the expression of feelings related to changes in the family; and identifying individual coping skills to help ease feelings of sadness, anger and fear.
-Monthly check-in groups:
Because illness can be unpredictable, children and teens often benefit from monthly group support. Monthly check-in groups are available for children ages 5 to 18 who have received initial Wonders & Worries support. We offer check-in groups for:
- School-age children who have a parent with an ongoing illness
- School-age children who have experienced the loss of a parent
- Middle school and high school kids who have a parent with an ongoing illness or who have experienced the loss of a parent
